Ginger AlonsoGinger Alonso (PhD 2023) started as an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Fall 2023 at California State University, Chico in the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice. In addition to her teaching and research at CSUC, Ginger is a faculty advisor in the MPA program and a volunteer for the Data Science Initiative. Ginger was a Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) scholar. As a doctoral student, she received the Robert Jackman Award and was nominated for the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award in 2020. Her research and teaching interests broadly integrate identity politics and health policy. During her PhD, her research focused on the role of ethnic identity, ideology and partisanship in perceptions of crisis events like economic recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Moving forward, she will continue to explore the tension between self-interest and community interests during times of hardship, as well as initiating a new project exploring the impact of natural disasters on the healthcare workforce in medically underserved areas. Sam CollittSam Collitt is the lead researcher at Committee of 100, a US non-profit that seeks to improve social and policy outcomes for Chinese Americans. During his PhD, his research focused on using survey data to assess how partisans get and process political information. At Committee of 100, he continues to use and produce survey data to gain new insights about particular populations’ opinions and behaviors. In 2023, Sam led Committee of 100’s side of a collaborative survey research project with Columbia University: a large-scale national study of Chinese Americans’ health outcomes, financial security, cultural identities, experiences with racial discrimination, and political opinions & engagement. His work has been featured in news stories by a wide variety of national outlets. Rana's monograph dissertation, “Intersectional Stereotyping and Voter Bias: The Impact of Mammy, Jezebel, and Sapphire Stereotypes on Black Women Candidates,” explores topics of gender, race, and voter perceptions by investigating how mass media stereotypes of Black women (e.g., Mammy, Jezebel, Sapphire) shape voters’ evaluations of Black women candidates in the United States.
